R.I.P: Rainbow Fish Yuen

Back in Christmas of 2011, Eliana got a beta fish as a present from Grandma Rice and Eliana named him Rainbow Fish.  So Rainbow Fish Yuen became a part of our family and has lived in his fishbowl on our kitchen counter ever since.

Here is Eliana, three and a half years old, and little Karina, 18 months old, admiring the new member of the family.

Rainbow Fish lived a happy life, until a couple of days ago that is…  Maybe Rainbow Fish was reaching the limits of his fishy life span or maybe it's because Elvin got lazy about changing his water.  Whatever the reason, Rainbow Fish passed away, as quietly as the life he lived.

So yesterday, Elvin took the girls out to the backyard for a burial service.  We scooped Rainbow Fish out and laid him out on a paper towel, which became his death shroud.
He used to be bright blue and red in life, but in death his colors were much more muted.
The girls dug a hole for him.  This was in Eliana's raised bed, in front of her violas.  We laid him to rest and then covered him up with soil.
We also made a tombstone of sorts for him, using a popsicle stick.  It says:

R.I.P.
Rainbow Fish Yuen
2011-2014

And as a final a final gesture, the girls sprinkled his fish food over his resting place.  Eliana says it's so that he will have food in heaven…
Rainbow Fish: Thanks for providing hours of entertainment to the girls.  You'll be missed!
